“Visual Pleasure/Jukebox Cinema” is a video series that playfully takes its name from the pivotal feminist film essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” by Laura Mulvey. In it, I reenact the musical Scopitone films of the 1960s. To make this work I’ve assembled a cast of women, ages 55-92, including my mother, grandmother, their life-long friends, and elders of the queer community. These shot-by-shot remakes position my cast of elders as objects of my desire or vice versa and envision fantasy histories of age, race and trans-inclusive lesbian spaces.
